Vodka Makes The Perfect Cocktail, But What Else Can It Do?

Vodka Makes The Perfect Cocktail, But What Else Can It Do?

16 weird and wonderful uses for vodka... and a few drink recipes.
At a recent cocktail party, I was surprised to find people favoring brandy and bourbon drinks over vodka drinks. It surprised me because vodka has always seemed to me to be the go-to choice for a good drink. Maybe a Martini, a vodka tonic, a Cosmo, or even a Black Russian, all delicious drinks.

I’m a vodka fan, personally. And even though vodka seems to have fallen out of favor over the last few years as a perfect cocktail mixer, I still think the Martini is one of the best cocktails ever invented. I mean, there must be hundreds of martini recipes alone. And that doesn’t even touch on the whole Bloody Mary sect.
With vodka out of favor at the local bar, I started to wonder how else vodka might earn its keep, and found out something pretty interesting.

Vodka is versatile.
Vodka has many uses. Some of them are interesting and some are way out there. So read on to discover a countdown of some weird and wonderful uses for vodka.
16. Clean jewelry. Soak jewelry in vodka for five minutes, rinse and dry
15. Remove lipstick stains from clothing. Rub the stain with vodka, then throw into your regular wash.

14. Cure foot odor by washing your feet with vodka
13. Make a soothing ice pack. Mix one cup vodka and one cup water in a resealable freezer bag and freeze until slushy. Use to relieve sprains, aching muscles and tired eyes.
12. Treat an ear ache. Put a few drops of vodka in your ear, let set for a few minutes, then drain. The vodka will kill the bacteria that is causing pain in your ear.
11. Make a mouthwash - that’s right, mouthwash! If you want minty breath, but don’t want your boss to think you’ve had a three martini breakfast, try this recipe. Mix 1/2 cup cinnamon or 3-4 whole sprigs of fresh mint with one cup vodka. Seal in a jar and let flavors mingle for about two weeks. Strain the mixture through a coffee filter. To use, mix with warm water and rinse your mouth. But remember not to swallow!
10. Treat cold sores by applying a little vodka to the spot with a q-tip. Your cold sore will be gone within a few days.
9. Clear up your outbreak of teenage acne. Since alcohol is a commonly used ingredient in acne products, why not use vodka instead? Apply vodka to your face using a cotton ball. The alcohol in the vodka is an astringent which will clean, tighten pores and kill bacteria.
8. Clean your cheaters. Yes, vodka can clean your eye glasses. Simply wipe each lenss with a soft, clean cloth that’s been dampened with vodka. The alcohol will clean the glass, kill germs and remove dirt and grime that has built up on your lenses.

7. Clean and disinfect your razor. Fill a cup with vodka and soak your safety razor blade in it after shaving. The vodka will disinfect and clean any build up from the blade to help prevent rusting and keep it sharp.
6. Treat Poison Ivy. One of the many hazards of enjoying the great outdoors is an the sting and itch of poison ivy, oak or sumac. It can lead to a nasty, long-lasting rash. To avoid the rash, pour vodka on skin that has come into contact with poison ivy, and the alcohol will wash away the itchy culprit, Urushiol.
5. Freshen your laundry. Did your dog bring something smelly inside and lay it on your lap? Did your Caesar Salad miss your mouth and hit your shirt at lunch?  Does your son work on a shrimp boat? When strong odors are a problem, use vodka to eliminate them. Keep a spray bottle of vodka handy in the laundry. Simply spritz the offending item with vodka and let dry before washing. Vodka kills odor-causing bacteria, but doesn't leave a scent behind when dry. (Spot-test first to be safe.)
4. Keep it shiny. Make your chrome, glass and porcelain fixtures sparkle by wiping them with vodka. Just a few drops on a soft, clean cloth will cut the grease and add the shine.
3. Keep your hair healthy. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. to have a super clean scalp and extra shiny locks.
2. Get rid of mold. Fill a spray bottle with vodka and squirt the icky black stuff to keep your bathroom smelling fresh.
And the number one, weirdest use for vodka I can come up with is - drum roll please -  using it to make a screwdriver... but hey, that’s just me. Ba-dum-pump!
For me, it’ll always be a martini, James Bond style, please.

And in case you, too, really just want to drink your vodka, here are a few really good - but weird and drinkable - ideas for your vodka.

But first, a question: What do you get when you mix Absolut Vodka with Newman’s Own Lemonade ?
Answer? An Absolut Newman’s, of course.
You could Make Bacon Infused Vodka and use it in a BLT Bloody Mary
How about trying The Greentini (made with 360 Organic Vodka)
Or give The Grape Escape Martini at try.

Can a drink a day keep the pounds away?

Women Who Drink Gain Less Weight

Can a drink a day keep the pounds away?

Dieters are often advised to stop drinking alcohol to avoid the extra calories lurking in a glass of wine or a favorite cocktail. But new research suggests that women who regularly consume moderate amounts of alcohol are less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers and are at lower risk for obesity.
The findings, reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are based on a study of 19,220 United States women aged 39 or older who, at the start of the study, fell into the “normal weight” category based on their body mass index. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston tracked the women’s drinking habits over 13 years. About 60 percent of the women were light or regular drinkers, while about 40 percent reported drinking no alcohol.
Over the course of the study, 41 percent of the women became overweight or obese. Although alcohol is packed with calories (about 150 in a six-ounce glass of wine), the nondrinkers in the study actually gained more weight over time: nine pounds, on average, compared with an average gain of about three pounds among regular moderate drinkers. The risk of becoming overweight was almost 30 percent lower for women who consumed one or two alcohol beverages a day, compared with nondrinkers.
The findings are certain to be confusing for women who continue to receive conflicting messages about the health benefits and risks of alcohol. Although moderate drinking is associated with better heart health, regular drinking also increases breast cancer risk.
The trend toward less weight gain among drinkers doesn’t appear to hold true for men. A 2003 study of British men showed that regular drinkers gained more weight than nondrinkers. Studies suggest that drinking alcohol has different effects on eating habits among men and women. Men typically add alcohol to their daily caloric intake, whereas women are more likely to substitute alcohol for food. In the Archives study, women who drank alcohol reported fewer calories from food sources, particularly carbohydrates.
In addition, there may be differences in how men and women metabolize alcohol. Metabolic studies show that after men drink alcohol, they experience little if any metabolic change. But alcohol appears to slightly speed up a woman’s metabolism.
The link between consumption of red wine and less weight gain was particularly pronounced in the Archives study. Some studies have suggested that resveratrol, a compound present in grapes and red wine, appears to inhibit the development of fat cells and to have other antiobesity properties.
The findings don’t mean women should rush to drink alcohol to lose weight. Other research shows that once a person is already overweight, her alcohol metabolism is more efficient, and so an overweight woman may gain more weight from alcohol than a lean woman. The data do, however, suggest that for many women facing weight problems, the extra calories are probably not coming from alcoholic beverages.

IPL Goes Green

IPL Goes Green!!!

Indian Premier League (IPL) joins the ranks of Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup by entering into a strategic tie-up with United Nation Environment Program (UNEP) in making its league green.
The IPL thus becomes the first sports body in the country to take such an initiative and plans to go carbon neutral by 2011.
“In close cooperation with the UNEP, the IPL will calculate its carbon footprint for each match during the 2010 season and take measures to reduce the carbon emission and compensate it with measures like planting of trees, eco-friendly waste management and efficient use of energy and water,” said Lalit Modi, IPL chairman and commissioner, during a press conference, where he signed an MoU with the UNEP representative Satinder Bindra.
When asked how he is planning to offset culprits like floodlights used during the match, which are huge energy guzzlers, Lalit said: “We will get energy emissions of these floodlights evaluated during a match and then try and offset it by using more energy efficient bulbs and planting trees.”
Bindra, director with the UNEP, had more plausible ideas. “Another way to address the issue is by using solar-powered floodlights and other renewable energy to reduce the carbon footprint.”
The IPL is also planning to use star cricketers to promote environmental awareness to millions of cricket fans in India and abroad. “Every day we are planning to televise environment-friendly tips to millions of viewers across the world so that they can incorporate it into their lifestyle and help the world go green,” said Modi.
Bindra, who has been involved with the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup in a similar initiative said, “If I were to use a cricketing term, I think this tie-up is going to be an environmental game changer. It’s truly a landmark initiative and will go a long way to create environmental awareness among people as cricket is hugely popular in the country.”
The IPL intends to use its popularity to promote UNEP’s environmental initiatives such as the Climate Neutral Network, the Billion Tree Campaign and World Environment Day.
The tie-up is being seen as a trendsetting initiative in the country, more so as India will be hosting Commonwealth Games this year and co-hosting the ICC World Cup in 2011.

Indian Axe Effect

Unable to attract even a single girl, frustrated man sues Unilever India

Disclaimer: Do not know if true, received in mail

New Delhi.  In what could prove to be a major marketing and legal embarrassment for Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), a 26-year-old man has filed a case against the FMCG company, which owns the Axe brand of men grooming products, for ‘cheating’ and causing him ‘mental suffering’.
The plaintiff has cited his failure to attract any girl at all, even though he’s been using Axe products for over seven years now. Axe advertisements suggest that the products help men in instantly attracting women.
Vaibhav Bedi, the petitioner, also surrendered all his used, unused and half-used deodorant sprays, perfume sticks and roll-ons, anti-perspirants, aftershaves, body washes, shampoos, and hair gels to the court, and demanded a laboratory test of the products and narcotics test of the brand managers of Axe. Vaibhav was pushed to take this step when his bai  (maid) beat him with a broom when he tried to impress her by appearing semi-nude in front of her after applying all the Axe products.

No girl ever asked Vaibhav to call her
“Where the @#$% is the Axe effect? I’ve been waiting for it for over seven years. Right from my college to now in my professional life, no girl ever agreed to even go out for a tea or coffee with me, even though I’m sure they could smell my perfumes, deodorants and aftershaves. I always applied them in abundance to make sure the girls get turned on as they show in the television commercial. Finally I thought I’d try to impress my lonely bai  who had an ugly fight with her husband and was living alone for over a year. Axe effect my foot!” Vaibhav expressed his unhappiness.

Vaibhav claims that he had been using all the Axe products as per the company’s instructions even since he first bought them. He argued that if he couldn’t experience the Axe effect despite using the products as directed, either the company was making false claims or selling fake products.
“I had always stored them in cool and dry place, and kept them away from direct light or heat. I’d always use a ruler before applying the spray and make sure that the distance between the nozzle and my armpit was at least 15 centimeters. I’d do everything they told. I even beat up my 5-year-old nephew for coming near my closet, as they had instructed it to be kept away from children’s reach. And yet, all I get is a broom beating from my ugly bai .” Vaibhav expressed his frustration.

Vaibhav claims that he had to undergo a lot of mental suffering and public humiliation due to the lack of an Axe effect and wants HUL to compensate him for this agony. An advocate in Karkardooma court, who happened to mistake Vaibhav for some deodorant vendor when he entered the court premises with all the bottles, has now offered to take up his case in the court. HUL has been served a legal notice in this regard.

HUL has officially declined to comment on the case citing the subject to be sub judice, but our sources inform that the company was worried over the possible outcomes of the case. The company might argue that Vaibhav was hopelessly unattractive and unintelligent and didn’t possess the bare minimum requirements for the Axe effect to take place. Officially HUL has not issued any statement, but legal experts believe that HUL could have a tough time convincing the court.
“HUL might be tempted to take that line of argument, but it is very risky. There is no data to substantiate the supposition that unattractive and unintelligent men don’t attract women. In fact some of the best looking women have been known to marry and date absolutely ghoulish guys. I’d suggest that the company settles this issue out of court.” noted lawyer Ram Jhoothmalani said.

Sachin The Legend All Words of Praise

                                     "THE MASTER OF MASTERS"
It was 24 of April 1973 and the house of a well known Marathi novelists was pampered with celebrations of the birth of a third son in the family. Nobody knew that the youngest sibling of late Sh. Ramesh Tendulkar will one day set 'Sky as the Limit' and make the country proud. Born in Mumbai (then Bombay) into a middle-class family, Sachin Tendulkar is a pillar of an unmatched success attained by his own devotion, passion and love for the game of cricket.

In a splendid career extending over two decades, Sachin has broken almost every record of cricket history. He has actually redefined the English proverb “Records are meant to be broken by Sachin”. From domestic circuit to the international arena, no record seems to be untouched by the little master.Sachin Tendulkar, the brightest star in the world of cricket has achieved his greatest prices with his intellectual and skillful cricketing brains.

Here are some interesting facts related to the legend of Sachin Tendulkar – the modern age Bradman.

Did You Know? ? ?

*Sachin is ambidextrous. He bats with his right hand but signs autographs and eats or plays table tennis with his left.

* Tendulkar sponsors 200 under-privileged children every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO.

* Sachin is the only Indian cricketer to reach Madams Tussauds museum with his statue standing tall.

*Virgin Comics is launching a series of comic books featuring Sachin Tendulkar as a superhero.

* It had taken Tendulkar 79 ODI's to score a century.

* In school, Tendulkar took immense pride in his long curly hair, and was once mistaken for a girl by good friend and fellow cricketer Atul Ranade.

* Sachin Owns two restaurants in Mumbai by the names Sachin'sand Tendulkars.

* Like loads of other cricketers, Sachin is pretty superstitious – he’ll always put on his left pad before his right whenever he’s getting padded up.

* Sachin has recieved the top civilian honours in India like Arjuna award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushn.

* Sachin Tendulkar is the first batsman to have been declared run out by a third umpire in 1992 against South Africa in South Africa.

* Sachin Tendulkar is the only player to score a century while making his Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy debut.

* The present coach of Indian Cricket team, Gary Kirsten has an international cricket career of 14 years whereas Sachin himself is playing from 20 years.

* Sachin Tendulkar was named after music director Sachin Dev Burman.

* Ferrari gave Sachin Tendulkar a 360 Modena for equaling Bradman's 29 centuries in Test Cricket and laws were passed so he could bring the car into India without paying customs

* Sachin sought proper prior permission from Indian government to use the tricolour on his helmet.

* He was the first overseas cricketer to play for Yorkshire CCC in 1992.

* Oddly, Wisden does not include any innings by Tendulkar among its list of 100 greatest Test batting performances.
Rated as the second best batsman of all time (next to Don Bradman) by Wisden

* Highest number of centuries in both Test(47) and One day cricket(45).

* Highest run scorer in both both Test and One day cricket.

* 673 runs in 2003 World Cup, highest by any one in a single Cricket World Cup.

* In 1998 he hit 9 ODI centuries, the highest by any player in an year.

* In 1998 he made 1,894 ODI runs, still the record for ODI runs by any batsman in any given calendar year.

* Holds the record for scoring 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year. He has
done it six times – 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2003.

Sachin.....The MAN - Words of Praise For Him!!!!!

Read What People have to say about Indian Legend...

"Nothing bad can happen to us if we're on a plane in India with Sachin
Tendulkar on it."
- Hashim Amla, the South African batsman, reassures himself as he
boards a flight.
"Sometimes you get so engrossed in watching batsmen like Rahul Dravid
and Sachin Tendulkar that you lose focus on your job."
- Yaseer Hameed in pakistani newspaper.
"To Sachin, the man we all want to be"
- Andrew Symonds wrote on an aussie t-shirt he autographed specially for Sachin.
آ“Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the
cranium, there is something we don't know, something beyond scientific
measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of
sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play
alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people
switch on their TV sets and switch off their lives."
- BBC on Sachin
"Tuzhe pata hai tune kiska catch chhoda hai?"
- Wasim Akram to Abdul Razzaq when the latter dropped Sachin's catch in 2003 WC.
Sachin is a genius. I'm a mere mortal.
- Brian Charles Lara

which he handles all the adulation and the expectations and his innate
humility - all make for a one-in-a-billion individual,"

"There was a big party where stars from bollywood and cricket were

- Waqar Younis
'I Will See God When I Die But Till Then I Will See Sachin'
- A banner in Sharjah
Sachin Tendulkar has often reminded me of a veteran army colonel who
has many medals on his chest to show how he has conquered bowlers all
over the world. I was bowling to Sachin and he hit me for two fours in
a row. One from point and the other in between point and gully. That
was the last two balls of the over and the over after that we (SA)
took a wicket and during the group meeting i told Jonty (Rhodes) to be
alert and i know a way to pin Sachin. And i delivered the first ball
of my next over and it was a full length delivery outside the
offstump. And I shouted catch. To my astonishment the ball was hit to
the cover boundary. Such was the brilliance of Sachin. His reflex time
is the best I have ever seen. Its like 1/20th of a sec. To get his
wicket better not prepare. Atleast u wont regret if he hits you for
boundaries.
- Allan Donald
On a train from Shimla to Delhi , there was a halt in one of the
stations. The train stopped by for few minutes as usual. Sachin was
nearing century, batting on 98. The passengers, railway officials,
everyone on the train waited for Sachin to complete the century. This
Genius can stop time in India !!
- Peter Rebouck - Aussie journalist
"Sachin cannot cheat. He is to cricket what Gandhiji was to politics.
It's clear discrimination. "

all the others.
- Andy Flower
"I have seen God, he bats at no.4 for India "
- Mathew Hayden
"Commit all your sins when Sachin is batting. They will go unnoticed
coz even God is watching him."
- A hoarding in England

NOW THIS ONE IS PROBABLY THE BEST AND MOST CUTEST OF THE LOT
"Even my father's name is Sachin Tendulkar."
- Tendulkar's daughter, Sara, tells her class her father's name after
the teacher informs them of a restaurant of the same name in Mumbai.
